This year the Spooner Trophy was hosted by Wing Village Bowls Club and Winslow and Cheddington teams were given a warm belcome by Wing President Hilary Bugden and members of the Wing club. This annual competition is between three Clubs whose greens were constructed by Mr. Ray Spooner, namely Cheddington. Wing and Winslow.
On the hottest day of the year so far, with temperaturs expected to be in the low 30's, the Club Captains agreed to reduce the number of ends played in each of the two sessions from 11 to 7, and the air conditioning in the Wing clubhouse provided a welcome retreat from the heat on the green.
The scoring system defined in the rules of the Spooner Trophy are not the same as in our normal competitive games with other clubs. Of course winning your game is very important, but shot difference and the total number of shots scored is not used to calculate the final scores. Points are allocated for a win or a draw However, win or lose, a point is awarded for each end that you win.
Points are awarded to each team as follows: Win 10 points, draw 5 points and then 1 point for each end won. WInning your game by 1 shot will score 10 points, losing by 1 shot scores zero. Even if you lose a game you gain a valuable point for every end that you win.
As you can see from the result it was a close match
- Wing 76
- Winslow 67
- Cheddington 62
The winners, Wing Village Bowls Club, scored only 9 points more than Winslow, a narrow margin, and Cheddington only 5 points behind. Mrs Spooner presented the trophy to Brian Newman, the Wing Captain.
