We took 5 triples to Woburn Sands on a hot and sticky afternoon. We agreed to try to play 18 ends but would review it if players were feeling the heat too much – in the event one rink stopped after 16 ends but all the others played the full 18.

Amongst our 15 players we included Ethan, Robin’s grandson, visiting from USA.

In the end the match result went down to the wire with Winslow coming out on top by one shot scoring 76 to Woburn Sands 75.

Our highest winning rink was Ethan, Robin and John Gilbey - winning the last 5 ends to go from 9 – 7 to an eleven shot margin at 18- 7.

However with such a tight match every rink made a contribution to the result in a variety of ways.

  • On rink 1 Norman, Fiona and John Gomersall scored a 4 on end 17 to come out on top by one shot.
  • On rink 2 John Jenkins, Sheila Cadge and Victor Griffiths scored a 2 and a 1 on the last 2 ends for win by 2 shots.
  • On rink 4 Mick Bigby, Rosie Griffiths and Tony Lawrence won the last 4 ends and scored a 4 on end 18 to pull back – only losing by 6 shots.
  • On rink 5 Valerie Gomersall, John Thorogood and Roger Hayman were stuck on 6 from end 8 until scoring one on end 16 which was, of course, our winning margin even though they went down by 7 shots.

A couple of interesting points to note

  • Woburn Sands had 2 women players in every rink for a total of 10 compared with 4 for Winslow
  • How welcome the air conditioning was in the clubhouse – food for thought..
